About the Movie

Buzzfeed calls Speech & Debate the “Greatest Teen Movie of the Year.” Frustrated by the hypocrisy they see in their parents, teachers, and the entire school board, three unlikely teenagers form a friendship as they revive a defunct school club and set out to find a common truth and take on the world. Blogging, blackmail and Broadway belting drive the trio’s bond in this wickedly funny comedy.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Over all, the movie ... has a focus problem that leaves its humorous moments obscured and its intentions hazy. – Neil Genzlinger, New York Times, Apr 6, 2017

Rotten: Once a darkly comic romp centered around outing a pedophile teacher, this adaptation has been shorn of its sharpest edges, leaving a largely unfocused, conventional teen dramedy in its place. – Andrew Barker, Variety, Apr 7, 2017

Fresh: Although the story, which feels a tad past its expiration date, never digs too deeply into its central issues (hypocrisy, loneliness, censorship, finding one's voice), Dan Harris' peppy direction and nimble turns by the film's young leads prevail. – Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times, Apr 6, 2017

Theatre Kids will love it!

If you've ever been involved with theatre, or just enjoy it: This is the movie for you!

This is a joyous, infectiously funny look at what it's like to come out when you're different than everybody else. It's also about friendship - the interplay between the three young leads is warm, hilarious, moving, and seems completely relaxed and genuine. Mix in political and social commentary about censorship disguised as propriety with over-the-top singing and brilliantly bad lyrics delivered all out by the wonderful newcomer Sarah Steele, and you've got a winner. It all comes together in a perfect finale that still has me grinning.

Theatre geeks unite

Great job everyone! This movie is so good and I love the changes from the play. Bravo to the lead actors! You nailed it!
