Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The web-slinging sequences are bigger-better-brighter-faster than the already spectacular ones in 2002's Spider-Man, and at the same time, the film's smaller emotional moments are denser, richer and more resonant than those in the first. – Christy Lemire, Associated Press, Aug 24, 2014

Fresh: Like the first installment, refreshingly perverse in its intent. – Anthony Lane, New Yorker, Aug 5, 2013

Fresh: Spider-Man 2 is much more a grown-up love story than its predecessor. – Andrew Sarris, New York Observer, Apr 26, 2007

Fresh: A lot of talent to lavish on a single movie, but the result is uncommonly smart for the genre, and not just smart but tremendously enjoyable. – Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal, Jul 14, 2010

Way Better Than the First...

It may take a while for the action to start up in Spidey 2, but when it does it's great. This sequel deals on the inner turmoil our protagonist must face not only as Spider-Man, but as an adult living in the real world -- a nice contrast by the writer(s). The new villain, Doc Oc, is way better than The Green Goblin could ever hope to achieve. He's a struggling soul just as Spidey, only his has been focused on better achieving what he failed to do, as is Spidey -- saving the world after the death of his uncle. The script here is great. The acting is once again, very well done -- Simmon's character is wonderful. The music is basically the same from the first, a misstep by the composer Danny Elfman. Overall, this is a great sequel and could very well exist had the first not been made. Rent and buy this film.

Head in the Webs.

SPIDER-MAN was fun. I mean really, really fun. However, it was weighed down by the prospect that it took itself too seriously. SPIDER-MAN 2 takes all the fun of SPIDER-MAN and throws away the cheese. That is not to say that those shallow moments are entirely gone, but at least SPIDER-MAN 2 knows exactly what kind of movie it is. SPIDER-MAN 2 starts out a lot slower than SPIDER-MAN does, but when the ball gets rolling, man is it worth the wait! The characters are more developed, the action is so poetic it's almost like watching a synchronized dance, and the story contains more drama and humor. Real humor. The funny moments here are less laughable and more funny, let's just say. Also, where SPIDER-MAN contained some, well, "objecionable" content, SPIDER-MAN 2 is surpricsingly chaste. Here is one of those rare occasions where the sequel outdoes the original in every aspect. Swing us away, Spidey! CONTENT: Much styalized action violence; mild language; a few low tops. WHO: Teens and up. [For more Spider-Man like this, just click on my name]

One of the greatest superhero movies ever made, period!!

It's certainly up there with: The Dark Knight, Batman Begins and Iron Man, it's on the top 5 of my list. Spider-Man 2 is one of those rare action superhero movies that has the basic stuff: romance, comedy & drama, It just had everything! The action sequences especially the Train Fight scene between Spidey & Doc Ock is one of the most memorable, coolest, exciting, mind-blowing and greatest action sequences ever put on film. Despite that it doesn't have as much action as the other two spidey films, I still think it has the better story & plot of the three.
