About the Movie

Superstar genetic engineers Clive (Adrien Brody) and Elsa (Sarah Polley) specialize in splicing DNA from different animals to create incredible new hybrids. Now they want to use human DNA in a hybrid that could revolutionize science and medicine. But when the pharmaceutical company that funds their research forbids it, Clive and Elsa secretly take their boldest experimentation underground--risking their careers by pushing the boundaries of science to serve their own curiosity and ambition. The result is Dren, an amazing, strangely beautiful creature of uncommon intelligence and an array of unexpected physical developments. At first, Dren exceeds their wildest dreams. But as she grows and learns at an accelerated rate, her existence threatens to become their worst nightmare.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: A thoroughly repulsive science fiction-horror flick that slicks up its B-movie tawdriness with high-gloss production values and two otherwise classy stars. – Ann Hornaday, Washington Post, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: What makes Splice morally compelling isn't the bioethics quandaries it raises so much as the way it delves into parenthood. – Lisa Kennedy, Denver Post, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Daring, disturbing and deliciously twisted. – Tom Long, Detroit News, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: An engrossing, if flawed, techno thriller that never quite goes where expected, and that's what makes it such a pleasant surprise. – Cary Darling, Dallas Morning News, Jul 7, 2010

This is the best horror movie ever!!!!!

consistently awkward, but never interesting.

The science of the movie is very interesting, but once the science has been eliminated from the storyline within the first hour we are left with a film that is like an extended sex scene from Avatar. Literally. It's awkward, it's uncomfortable, and it's not in a good way. This film is hormonally fueled and is about a young creature discovering sex for the first time and becoming infatuated with the two scientists who created her. She becomes "curious".
I didn't think that was what the movie was about either until the storyline took that route and everyone in the theater began to laugh and shake their heads, some walking out.
I stayed to watch the plot get worse and worse, watch it turn into slapstick horror, cliche scares, and predictable storytelling. The creature acts like a bird, tilting her head fast, making moaning noises, and frowning a lot, and has rather fast reflexes. This gets rather laughable after a while...
If you're expecting this to be a film along the lines of "A.I: Artificial Intelligence", "Jurassic Park", or other scientifically fueled films which have deeper meanings or bring forth new concepts and ideas to our minds, then you will be greatly disappointed.
I'm merely giving you an honest warning about what the movies about...but I'm sure you will see it anyway if you really want to.
If you do, then I hope you really enjoy it, cause you spent money.
If you don't see it, then I promise that the only thing you're missing out on are a few really good laughs.
That being said, I really wanted to like this movie and saw it midnight the day it came out in theaters because it looked really good.
Overall this is well made, but poorly executed, and strays into a ridiculous storyline for the entire last half.
The End.

weird, but great.

well firstly, i wouldn't really call this a horror, i think it's more sci-fi, but that's just me.
secondly, this movie is awesome. it's really weird at some points, but it makes up with some awesome thrilling scenes (and a few parts that make you go "awww"). i recommend it. :)
