Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The principals' enthusiasm for their material has never seemed to fade. If anything, that enthusiasm grows more appealingly nutty with time. – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: Weighed down by a midsection even flabbier than the long-in-the-tooth cast, director Nicholas Meyer still delivers enough of what Trek auds hunger for to justify the trek to the local multiplex. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: There are weaknesses here--especially when the climax becomes too packed and chaotic, and the goodby over-hasty. But Meyer and Flynn get a fullness back into the characters. – Michael Wilmington, Los Angeles Times, Sep 7, 2016

Rotten: For a movie that begins with such promise, The Undiscovered Country ends with a whimper. – James Berardinelli, ReelViews, Jun 10, 2008

Excellent movie...questionable scenes.

Whilst the movie is excellent as far as storyline goes, this particular version that is acquirable from appple has several scenes missing. One scene in particular is the final unravelling of the conspiracy...POOF!...GONE! I haven't seen my old VHS version in a long time, but there are a total of at least 3 scenes cut from this downloadable version. 1. The scene, in the torpedo room, where Valeris reports to Spock that Gorkon's daughter is named Chancellor. 2. The scene where the Starfleet brass lay out the plan to rescue Kirk and McCoy. 3. The scene where the true identity of the klingon that Scotty killed is revealed. Definately disappointing. 5 stars for the movie... 2 stars for Apple on this one. -s

Excellent movie but ...

This movie rocked as I had remembered it. I too have noticed the missing scenes. Wish I had read the reviews before buying however. There are at least three major scenes missing. One with Spock being told that the Chancellor's daughter has been named the new chancellor. Second with Starfleet cooking up a plan to rescue Kirk and McCoy. The third (most important) is the unmasking of the shooter by Scotty. I don't get it. Why didn't Apple just make a direct transfer from the DVDs? They should still be on those.

The BEST of all the films. There are no missing scenes.

Just to clarify some confusion here, this version of the movie is the original theatrical release.  The missing scenes everyone's talking about are from the VHS, and later DVD, release.  If you want to see the movie as the director originally intended then this is the version to see.  There's nothing wrong with the extra scenes, but once you realize that they're additional scenes you'll realize they're fun but unnecessary.
