Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: O'Connell bristles with terrifying hair-trigger unpredictability. Watching him, you feel like you're witnessing the arrival of a new movie star. – Chris Nashawaty, Entertainment Weekly, Aug 27, 2014

Fresh: Starred Up is a small indie film in danger of slipping through the cracks at the Hollywood-driven multiplex. Finding it - in theaters or on VOD - is well worth the effort. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Aug 28, 2014

Fresh: It marries ferocious, unnerving violence and waves of profanity to powerful, psychologically acute performances in a way that is intensely dramatic as well as almost unbearable to watch at times. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Sep 5, 2014

Fresh: Starred Up has three powerful advantages: a realistic setting, fierce performances and the insight brought by scripter Jonathan Asser, who was an Oliver-like counselor in a tough London jail. – Mark Jenkins, NPR, Aug 28, 2014

Breathe Taking.

I have been waiting for this movie for a while. The style of filming and the cast are truly amazing. I could not see anyone else in this film, or playing the lead played byJack O’Connell. You have to see this film, it is one of those films that seems on the edge of not know where it will go, but in the end it was perfect and you would change nothing.

Starred Up

I found this film difficult to watch for two reasons: the amount of violence in it and the main character's accent. I often did not understand what was being said. However, Jack O'Connell gives a realistic, harrowing performance as the extremely angry, violent Eric Love.

Superbly acted, artfully directed, expertly crafted story. Jack O'Connell's performance establishes him as one of the most exciting acting talents of his generation.
