Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: O'Connell bristles with terrifying hair-trigger unpredictability. Watching him, you feel like you're witnessing the arrival of a new movie star. – Chris Nashawaty, Entertainment Weekly, Aug 27, 2014

Fresh: Starred Up is a small indie film in danger of slipping through the cracks at the Hollywood-driven multiplex. Finding it - in theaters or on VOD - is well worth the effort. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Aug 28, 2014

Fresh: It marries ferocious, unnerving violence and waves of profanity to powerful, psychologically acute performances in a way that is intensely dramatic as well as almost unbearable to watch at times. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Sep 5, 2014

Fresh: As harrowing as some of the depicted incidents are - this is prison, after all - Mackenzie resists sensationalism, preferring to keep his sights on the human element. By the end, he's worked a kind of alchemy. – Stephanie Zacharek, Village Voice, Aug 26, 2014

Customer Reviews

Amazing, and thoroughly engaging.

I have seen some amazing movies come out of Europe (besting even those from Hollywood) and this movie seems to be continuing the trend. Watching this movie with a 20 year veteran of the NYPD, he stated that everything was extremely realistic (more so than any American cop show he has ever seen), and the acting by the lead was so convincing, I found myself hating him by the end of the movie (where I usually feel nothing for the stars in most movies I watch). This, it turns out, is the mark of a great actor; one that can make you feel something, instead of completely apathy. I am thorough impressed by this film, and would recommend it to anyone that wants to see what real talent, dedication, and ability can produce.

Best Movie of 2014

This is by far THE. BEST. MOVIE. to come out in 2014…Wanted to watch it a second time immediately afterward.

Amazing movie

This film is completely compelling! Amazing script & the level of talent the characters portray is everything you would ask for in a film. When you first start watching the film, you get sucked in to this kid's hard journey. I really did appreciate some of the dark humorous moments incorporated into the film. As the movie continues, you can't tear yourself away from all the anticipating drama. I truly loved this movie especially the last 20 minutes. So glad I rented this movie, was worth every penny! Kudos!
