About the Movie

Academy Award®-winner Russell Crowe leads an all-star cast, including Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams & Helen Mirren in the gripping thriller about deception, manipulation & corruption. When D.C. Reporter Cal McCaffrey (Crowe) is assigned to investigate the murder of an assistant to an up-and-coming politician (Affleck), he uncovers a conspiracy that threatens to bring down the nation's power structures. In a town of spin-doctors and wealthy power brokers, he will discover one truth: when fortunes are at stake, no one's integrity, love or life is safe. From director Kevin Macdonald of The Last King of Scotland, State of Play brings together strong performances, riveting suspense and is "sophisticated, intelligent and powerful" (Shawn Edwards, Fox-TV).

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: It's really a story about the romance of newspapers and a good one - part of a tradition that goes all the way back to Ben Hecht and The Front Page. It may also mark the genre's end. – Sandra Hall, Sydney Morning Herald, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: The film held me a fair way in, because it's well paced and the actors are competent. But finally, the plot took one or two big twists too far. – Julie Rigg, MovieTime, ABC Radio National, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: State of Play succeeds as mainstream entertainment to the point where it hardly makes sense to complain about its pulled political punches. – Jake Wilson, The Age (Australia), Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: It hits the ground running, and - while never remotely innovative - manages to be unpredictable and labyrinthine enough to generally hold our attention. – Mark Demetrius, FILMINK (Australia), Jun 24, 2010

Underrated, Excellent!

Really loved this movie. Is a MIND thriller, not "action with blood and guts and many, many meaningless car chases, gratuitous sex or unnecessary bad language or destruction of property." If you want to see a movie based on good acting, a mystery, thriller plot that makes you think, multiple twists and a great story, great cast, and great directing, this is the movie for you. IT IS NOT BORING! Just not the usual blood and guts, killing and destruction that makes most action movies succeed monetarily. Well worth the watch.

Highly Under Rated

This movie should have made more money in theaters. It is an old fashoned thriller that is very well acted, well written and well directed. In my opinion its not worth buying, however give it a rent. If you have any tast in movies, you won't waist you're time.

Very Well Written.

Russel Crowe is one of my favorite actors along with Ben Affleck. I am going to buy it. You Should!!!! I am very surprised that this movie didn't get the attention that it needed it was actually a very good movie. Its like The Dark Knight in a sense that it deosn't need all the language and blood because it was was written so well.
