Bill Murray has joined the Army, and the Army will never be the same! When John Winger (Murray) loses his job, his car, his apartment and his girlfriend, all in one day, he decides he only has one option: volunteer for Uncle Sam. He talks his friend Russell (Harold Ramis) into enlisting with him. Where else, they figure, can they help save the world for democracy and meet girls! John and Russell find basic training a snap: they are arrested twice, have endless run-ins with their drill sergeant (Warren Oates) and get into a big mess at a female mud-wrestling match. They even steal a top secret government vehicle to take some gorgeous female MPs on a date, and wind up behind the Iron Curtain. Stripes is outrageous fun! And that's the fact Jack!

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Mr. Murray hasn't yet reached the point at which his routines can be sustained for more than 10 minutes at a time. But he has achieved a sardonically exaggerated calm that can be very entertaining.
Fresh: An anarchic slob movie, a celebration of all that is irreverent, reckless, foolhardy, undisciplined, and occasionally scatological. It's a lot of fun.
Fresh: The balance of the film consists of time-tested commercial material, most of which is still working fine.
Fresh: [Reitmam] manages a reasonable success rate at pulling off the numerous verbal and sight gags with which the script is peppered.
That's the fact, JACK!!!
This movie has a lot in common with Full Metal Jacket, except nobody blows their brains out, it's not set during Vietnam, it's not about the Marines and the actors are completely different. That's a half-joke. The similarity is they hit their peak at the end of basic training. Still, what a peak it is and how classic it remains. The graduation ceremony is enough to make this comic legend.
I love it for about an hour, then...
Like a lot of comedies of the 80's, this movie starts off extremely strong but runs out of steam way before the end. I love this movie and give it 2 thumbs up for a rental, but be warned - i find the last third of it to be somewhat tedious.
the relaxed and yet outrageous style of murray combined with the intelligence of ramis and the physical humor of john candy makes for the best military comedy of all time. and thats the fact jack
