About the Movie
One man becomes a symbol of hope and determination for a wounded city in Stronger, a deeply personal account of the infamous 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and its aftermath. Based on Jeff Bauman’s New York Times bestselling memoir, the film celebrates his unrelenting courage against unimaginable odds. On April 15, 2013, Bauman (Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal) was at the finish line of the Boston Marathon to cheer on his ex-girlfriend Erin Hurley (Emmy Award winner Tatiana Maslany) in an effort to win her back. When a blast rips through the crowd, killing three people and injuring scores of others, Jeff goes from being an ordinary working-class 27-year-old to a double amputee fighting for his life. As Boston and the world reel in shock and anger, a photo of Jeff being carried from the blast site becomes an iconic image of the attack. Despite his injuries, the unassuming Costco worker becomes a national hero by helping law enforcement identify one of the bombers. In the months following the blast, Jeff tackles intensive physical and emotional rehabilitation with the unwavering support of Erin and his family. It is Jeff’s deeply personal account of the heroic journey that tests a family’s bond, defines a community’s pride and inspires his inner courage to overcome a devastating adversity.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: There's a raw, tangible humanity to nearly every scene that sets the film gratifyingly apart. Jeff might not fit into anyone's glossy front-page idea of hero, but you never doubt for a moment that he's real.
Fresh: Kudos to a brilliant, hilariously unexpected performance from Jake Gyllenhaal in a powerhouse biopic about Boston bombing victim Jeff Bauman that doesn't sugarcoat the man's story - and that makes all the difference
Fresh: Green's film has a tense, nervy energy, most of which seems to glow from Gyllenhaal's very core.
Fresh: "Stronger" always feels right in the moment, solidified by an outstanding central performance by Gyllenhaal, and some wonderful ensemble work, especially the actors just below the top billing.
This movie is heavy!
This movie is heavy, almost emotionally draining. I went in completely blind not knowing what to expect be it a feel good story of a come back, or a depressing story of a broken man, and a broken city after the bombing(s) the movie is definitely worth a watch but be warned it's not so much feel good story. It's kind of depressing.
jake and tatiana both deserve an oscar!
their emotional performances deserve that award
Such a inspirational true story about a man who overcame adversity after such a horrific event. I can’t image life after a tragedy such as this. A must see!
