About the Movie
In this award-winning psychological thriller, Jakob and Helene’s quiet suburban life is completely turned upside down with the arrival of James, a young tennis player who mistakenly believes them to be his host family for a local tennis tournament. James is more than the disarming stranger he seems, and he seeks more than lodging. Much to Jakob’s chagrin, his wife, Helene, invites the attractive stranger to stay and enjoy a sail together. Jakob decides to give James an unwelcome lesson of his own—one that devolves into a full-fledged tennis match. Male egos clash, ripping open the past and awakening memories and sexual urges long suppressed. Left alone inside the married couple’s home, James rifles through their belongings and learns of their recently deceased son, Teddy. Armed with this information, he travels with them to the lake. The loss of the sailboat forces the trio to hike through the forest despite the ever-present threat of a mountain lion attack. With nightfall approaching, they take refuge in a secluded mountain cabin, where rekindled rivalries reach a fevered pitch when Jakob sends James into the night. Left alone, the wounded couple must confront the past, and their son’s death, through newfound compassion.
An independent journey...
Having watched Sean Jourdan’s film came to fruition from it’s inception via crowdfunding, it’s been fascinating to see the journey unfold. From that journey of the filmmaker to the emotionally gnarled journey that the characters fight to escape. These are characters painted with a seasoned sensibility for the human condition, which makes the cinematic experience all the more rewarding coming from a debut feature film. The entangled journey of these 3 characters twists together like thorny vines, blooming with intriguing flowers of humanity. The impassioned confusion of young man, lit aflame by a woman's bittersweet sexual wisdom and torment, all the while being smothered by the heartbreaking sense of loss spoiling into bitterness from her husband.
Excellent film...great characters and amazing cinematography. Well worth the time. Stick with until they get to the beach, things get interesting from there and it filled with tension and suspense.
