About the Movie

Tom Hanks writes, directs and co-stars in this refreshing, big-hearted comedy that captures the overnight triumph of an American rock band during the glory days of rock and roll. When a young appliance salesman agrees to fill-in for an injured drummer in a local talent show, four shooting stars are born. Faster than you can say "That Thing You Do," a Play-Tone Records executive (Hanks) signs the group and catapults them to fame as their signature tune skyrockets to the top of the charts!

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Mr. Hanks's debut feature, written and directed with delightful good cheer, is rock-and-roll nostalgia presented as pure fizz. – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: ...a brightly entertaining blend of humor and heartbreak about four fresh-faced guys in a band from Erie, Pa. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Nov 24, 2006

Fresh: Hanks has good "Thing" going. – Mike Clark, USA Today, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: A sweet, likeable tale of the quick rise to fame and then demise of a small town band. Set in 1964, Hanks' film offers a sanitized, Gump-ish look at a mythical period when boys were boys and girls were girls, with no references to the sex-drug subculture – Emanuel Levy, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

ha ha! i'm the first finally!!

i'm psyched that i'm the first to write a review. i have to say i have not seen the movie, neither am i planning on it. but i shall give it 5 stars becuz i like Liv Tyler and Tom Hanks. so.... here's my nonsensical review, see the movie, and tell me all about it in your own review!

the greatest movie you will ever see.

this is the type of movie that you will see once and never forget. its funny and theres great music! it just seems so real and all the characters are unforgetable! tom hanks brilliantly played and directed in this movie. he deserves both to behind and in front of the camera. any parents out there who read this: this ok for any age. the only remotely adult part is the kissing scene at the end. it might gross some of the younger kids out but really not all as racy as kissing scenes can go. your kids will love the music and even get up and dance to it (i know i did!) a great family movie a must buy! you will never forget it.

This is a fun and beautiful masterpiece. Rent it if you wish but be warned... you'll end up buying it.
