About the Movie
In this chilling and inventive documentary, executive produced by Errol Morris (The Fog of War) and Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man), the filmmakers examine a country where death squad leaders are celebrated as heroes, challenging them to reenact their real-life mass-killings in the style of the American movies they love. The hallucinatory result is a cinematic fever dream, an unsettling journey deep into the imaginations of mass-murderers and the shockingly banal regime of corruption and impunity they inhabit. Shaking audiences at the 2012 Toronto and Telluride Film Festivals and winning an Audience Award at the 2013 Berlin International Film Festival.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Joshua Oppenheimer's documentary interviews leaders of Indonesian death squads responsible for deaths of millions & has them re-enact the killings. The combination of drama therapy and accidental self-exposure - utterly bizarre, unexpected and valuable.
Fresh: This stunning "documentary of the imagination" shows Anwar and other thugs staging scenes of torture and murder for the camera.
Fresh: I certainly do not move that the film should be suppressed, only that one should know what it is. It is a bath in a smiling madness.
Fresh: [A] unique and unforgettable documentary.
It is a “not for everyone” movie… No visual effects, no beautiful editing… just a raw and pure evil documentary. How people can act like that?
This is not "entertainment"
What you have in this flick, at the end of the day, is 160 minutes of watching two narcissistic low-lifes stroke and entertain themselves. It provides a vivid and deeply saddening portrait of the cardinal sin in action, pride-based self-centerdness. I would not recommend this film.
Best Film I Have Ever Seen
