About the Movie

In this chilling and inventive documentary, executive produced by Errol Morris (The Fog of War) and Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man), the filmmakers examine a country where death squad leaders are celebrated as heroes, challenging them to reenact their real-life mass-killings in the style of the American movies they love. The hallucinatory result is a cinematic fever dream, an unsettling journey deep into the imaginations of mass-murderers and the shockingly banal regime of corruption and impunity they inhabit. Shaking audiences at the 2012 Toronto and Telluride Film Festivals and winning an Audience Award at the 2013 Berlin International Film Festival.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Joshua Oppenheimer's documentary interviews leaders of Indonesian death squads responsible for deaths of millions & has them re-enact the killings. The combination of drama therapy and accidental self-exposure - utterly bizarre, unexpected and valuable. – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle, Aug 8, 2013

Fresh: This stunning "documentary of the imagination" shows Anwar and other thugs staging scenes of torture and murder for the camera. – Bill Stamets, Chicago Sun-Times, Aug 16, 2013

Fresh: I certainly do not move that the film should be suppressed, only that one should know what it is. It is a bath in a smiling madness. – Stanley Kauffmann, The New Republic, Nov 14, 2013

Fresh: Better characters could hardly have been invented. – Laura Bennett, The New Republic, Aug 1, 2013

Must see

One of the most incredible documentaries, or for that matter: films, you will have ever seen. Surrealism meets Hannah Arendt. Absolutely incredible.

One of the finest documentaries I've seen, as well as the closest-to-perfect release of 2013 for me - either nonfiction or fiction. Its subject matter is compelling, the device used to explore it is thoroughly original, the way the filmmaker maintains distance throughout is effective - you never even hear his voice apart from one question near the end - and the complexity with which the themes are explored is impressive. Even the somewhat slow pacing adds impact subtly as the story unfolds.

Way too long, brilliant and unbearable

Highly disturbing movie of scum who should be in jail. Brilliant producing, but the movie is way too long and gives too little backstory on these scum.
