About the Movie
Martin Scorsese, one of the great directors of our time, directs Oscar®-winner Daniel Day-Lewis (1989 Best Actor, My Left Foot), Michelle Pfeiffer and Winona Ryder in a brilliant adaptation of Edith Wharton's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. A ravishing romance about three wealthy New Yorkers caught in a tragic love triangle, the ironically-titled story chronicles the grandeur and hypocrisy of high society in the 1870s. At the center of the film is Newland Archer (Day-Lewis), an upstanding attorney who secretly longs for a more passionate life. Engaged to the lovely but ordinary socialite May Welland (Ryder), Newland resigns himself to a life of quiet complacency. But when May's unconventional cousin returns to New York amid social and sexual scandal, Newland risks everything for a chance at true love. THE AGE OF INNOCENCE is a spellbinding portrait of hidden romance and regret.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Mr. Scorsese has made a big, intelligent movie that functions as if it were a window on a world he had just discovered, and about which he can't wait to spread the news.
Fresh: Spurning Masterpiece Theatre twittiness, Scorsese cuts to the primal passions of Wharton's tale.
Fresh: An extraordinarily sumptuous piece of filmmaking.
Rotten: I don't know any of those [prior] versions, and I wonder how (which means I doubt that) they avoided the snare that Wharton unwittingly set for her adapters, the snare that, for all his gifts, caught Scorsese.
by far my favourite movie and book
when can we purchase this!!!!
Can Scorsese direct a bad movie? Can Day-Lewis have a subpar acting performance? I DON'T THINK SO! I'm not the biggest fan of period pieces, but anything with those two guy's names on it, I must see. For me, the movie wasn't just about love, but finding inner peace and accepting the situation. I don't think it's a chick flick either...I really do think guys would like this movie.
The storyline is very simple but there are many, many, times when one is completely entralled by the small touches that build it up to a full and rich movie.
