About the Movie

They say, the boy was scared to death. When the death of a child at a boarding school is blamed on a ghost, hoax exposer Florence Cathcart is certain that science and reason can explain it. Starring Rebecca Hall (The Town), Dominic West (John Carter) and Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter), The Awakening is a terrifying mystery filled with haunting twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: For all of its airs of refinement, "The Awakening" is pretty stale stuff. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Aug 16, 2012

Fresh: Dominic West personifies the melancholia of a country overwhelmed by death. – Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly, Aug 8, 2012

Fresh: Hall's committed performance validates even the maddest developments, and she slips into the period well, recalling Virginia Woolf in her lank, swan-necked bearing and tremulous suffering. – Nick Pinkerton, Village Voice, Aug 14, 2012

Fresh: An enjoyably old-fashioned ghost story in the vein of "The Others" and "The Orphanage." – Sara Stewart, New York Post, Aug 17, 2012

I love horror movies, but they get predictable and all seem to mimic each other; however, this one was really unique. It had great acting and a lot of depth sprinkled with enough fright and suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat. I would definitely recommend this movie.

I liked it

This movie is creepy & has nice atmosphere . There were a couple of scenes that made me jump. I didn't see the twist coming. I would recommend it if you like scary movies without gore.

Really good spooky movie!

This is more of a Henry James kind of Ghost story- NOT A HORROR film. Really enjoyable- Rebecca Hall is one of my faves- beautiful woman, and a really fine actor.
Would not recommend this to the type who loves typical american gross out horror stuff, much more old fashioned, sort of period piece- but I really enjoyed it. There were some good scares and fantastic moods...
