Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Kent has taste, an eye and a knack for brisk, accelerated pacing. In the case of "The Babadook," familiarity breeds an eerily gratifying contentment. – Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune, Dec 18, 2014

Fresh: At its heart, "The Babadook" is a story of mother and son, whose relationship ultimately determines whether they survive the demon - or die trying. – Thomas Lee, San Francisco Chronicle, Jan 15, 2015

Fresh: Jennifer Kent's startling debut is an artful horror-chiller that gets under your skin and into your psyche. – Rafer Guzman, Newsday, Dec 14, 2014

Fresh: With its mixture of frights both literal and literary, "The Babadook" will, I suspect, satisfy horror's devotees as much as the genre's doubters. – Michael O'Sullivan, Washington Post, Dec 11, 2014

Scared the hell out of me. This movie had a combination of psychological and suspenseful themes. It had an amazing cinematography. This movie makes “The Conjuring” and “Insidious” look silly.

I hate to give any film a low rating because I know how hard filmmakers work to bring a story to life on the big screen. That being said, I have to say this is one of the weakest horror films I have ever seen. From all the positive reviews I was very disappointed. I came in expecting a horror movie or at least a psychological thriller and this film was neither of those. The story was incoherent, confusing and unconvincing. The film was not scary and the audio and video effects were poorly designed. I swear that I heard what sounded like a dinosaur roar. The acting was decent but the directing and producing were subpar. Based on the concept, the film could have been intriguing, but unfortunately the finished product ended up not being anywhere near the quality it had the potential to be. Very disappointing. Save your money.

I normally do not write reviews, but after watching this movie, I felt obligated to warn unsuspecting viewers not to waste their time or their $6.99 on this garbage. The first half of the movie you almost wish the annoying kid would get "babadooked", and the second half you wish she would. 98% from Rotten Tomatoes? I used to trust you people.
