About the Movie
More graphically-realistic than ever The Blob has returned in this horrific tale about a vile, malignant life-form that crashes to earth in a cozy, rural American town called Arborville. Untroubled by conscience or intellect, the Blob does only one thing and does it well. It eats anything and everything that moves...men, women, children. And tonight it wants to swallow Arborville whole. The original version of The Blob thrilled and terrified audiences back in the 50's. Now the oozing, gooey killer is back with a new high-tech 80's look. What was once only suggested now comes to life in this visually gut-wrenching thriller in the tradition of such classic remakes as "The Thing" and "The Fly".
You see.....this is how a remake is supposed to be
Today, people are remaking things left and right. It kind of gets annoying after a while because they never give the originals any respect. However, this one not only pays homage to the original but it also adds something to it that the original doesn't at times.
1) For all you gore-aholics (not me), this is for you because you see the blob actually dissolve people
2) The Efffects- if this movie were remade today, guess what? They would use CGI, which is rarely pulled off good (AVATAR for example.....I'm not giving that movie any more credit...ever). However, this film's effects are improved on from the original.
3) Story- the story is pretty much the same with a few variations (where the Blob came from) and how they stop it
4) Acting- OK, I'll admit it....there's no big name stars in this film like Steve McQueen or anything like that. But, these people at least tried. You do have to give them some credit for that at least.
Overall, it's a pretty good remake. Now, I hear they are remaking it....again! WHY?! If you can keep the effects natural, like this one and keep to the same story with a few variations I'll be happy. But, honestly I am against the whole thing like I am with the Thing remake...again (yep, their doing it again folks....whether it'll be based on Howard Hawks's film or John Carpenter's film is up to them).
Now, as for uploading the original film...you know. I kind of felt that it was OK. This one was also OK. Both films may be worth checking out.
OK, but a far cry from the original. This was one of the many "re-make" movies from the 80's. It's okay at best but as most re-makes, it can hardly compare to the original which starred Steve McQueen. It's ashame that itunes is investing in movie re-makes such as this, The Fog, The Thing, etc.... They should concentrate more on obtaining the originals.
I disagree with the reviewers who say the original is much better than this version. I think quite the opposite is true. The 80's "The Blob" along with the 80's "The Fly" are two of the few remakes that I think far surpass the originals. Sure, it's a schlocky 80's horror movie, but taken in that context, it's damn good!
A great script, an excellent combination of FX to achieve the look of the Blob, and absolute horror and carnage... I love it! This is a horror movie with BALLS. Within the first half hour, (spoiler alert) they kill off the guy we're expecting to be the star! They kill little kids! They kill off innocents, characters we like and want to live!
This movie takes no prisoners and pulls no punches. It takes the idea of the original, puts an interesting twist into the plot, injects it with good FX, good acting and a decent budget, and you have something far superior to the original. Just like "Little Shop of Horrors" -- The cheap and dated original can never hold up to the musical remake.
That's just my opinion, I could be wrong... NOT!!!
