About the Movie

Italian visual artist Yuri Ancarani’s exquisite documentary enters the surreal world of wealthy Qatari sheikhs with a passion for amateur falconry. The opulence of this Middle Eastern gas state is on full display as the men race SUVs up and down sand dunes, fly their prized falcons around on private jets, and take their pet cheetahs out for desert spins in their souped-up Ferraris. The result is a film jaw-dropping not only for its displays of wealth, but for the pure cinematic beauty that won Ancarani the Filmmaker of the Present award at the 2016 Locarno Film Festival.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: It is detached almost to the point of abstraction. – A.O. Scott, New York Times, Sep 7, 2017

Fresh: The movie eschews narration and captions, and instead just strings together one stunning scene after another of inconceivably wealthy oil men indulging their passions. – Noel Murray, Los Angeles Times, Dec 7, 2017

Fresh: ... features some of the most stunning falcon-cam shots ever captured. – Mike D'Angelo, AV Club, Dec 14, 2017

Fresh: It's hard to say whether this is an unusually sheened documentary, an art piece that uses aspects of the real and transforms them radically, or a highly formal visual poem. But it's a strange and beautiful thing: to use that word again, fabulous indeed. – Jonathan Romney, Film Comment Magazine, Sep 5, 2017

The first five minutes of this odd little Flik is somewhat fascinating but soon it occurs to you that there is no, not any, none, zero, nada, point to it all. And what's with these fellows being out there and doing all these "fun" things without their ladies? Are they all gay? I'm going to see if I can get my money back

Crude at $40 or lower
