Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: If you can discern any critical distance or interesting perspective here, or even a good reason to spend 90 minutes in such company, I'm afraid the joke is on you. – A.O. Scott, New York Times, Nov 15, 2012

Rotten: The Comedy pretends to be a satire of entitlement, but it's made in a style so indulgent that the whole film feels entitled in the extreme. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Nov 14, 2012

Fresh: For a catalog of aggressively stupid, socially deviant male behavior, Rick Alverson's cheekily titled The Comedy is not without a certain subversive intelligence. – Justin Chang, Variety, Jan 24, 2012

Fresh: Transgressively brilliant... an itchy critique of entitlement starring avant-garde comedian Tim Heidecker as one of Williamsburg's overprivileged. – Aaron Hillis, Village Voice, Jun 21, 2012

Far from aimless, hits home the whole way through

I feel compelled to say that this movie is far from aimless as I've seen some suggest. A few seconds into this and I had stepped out of my body and into Swanson's (Tim Heidecker). He plays the role flawlessly, same goes for the cast as a whole. It's absolutely brilliant, and one of my new favorites. Great to see Tim in something so different from T&E and so good. Happy to see Eric made an appearance as well. Kudos to the cast and all involved. Great job!

Unbelievably Overrated

Boring. A boring character study of an empty character -- tedious. This movie flat lines through one juvenile scene after another. Couched as pithy realism, the existential angst of a crude loser goes nowhere very, very slowly.

Strangely beautiful

Found myself profoundly affected by this movie...takes what you thought you knew about the people involved (namely Tim Heidecker) and turns it on its head. Heidecker's performance is completely arresting and the whole thing is just gorgeously shot...Antonioni/Gus Van Sant fans take note. Will absolutely be thinking about this film for a while...
