Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: The Counselor is the cumbersome end product of a high-minded writer trying to slum and a slick director aiming for cosmic depth.
Rotten: Each scene serves as little more than an index card for the mechanistic plot, which Scott films in a glossy and fluid style befitting an industrial promotion for the movie's high-tech weaponry.
Rotten: It's not so much a bad film as it is a disappointing one. A very disappointing one.
Rotten: The narrative pings around as meaninglessly and entertainingly as a pinball machine at first, but the comic timing feels off ...
Some of my favorite actors are in this film... I can see why it wasn't promoted. Endless amounts of dizzying dialogue..Wasted talent, no direction, no reason for it... One of the worst films I've seen in a long time. I can hardly believe this made the light of day.
An Entertaining Character Study
While The Counselor received poor critical reviews, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. It plays at the speed of a movie like No Country For Old Men, which makes sense because they were penned by the same author. Fantastic performances by all the cast help carry the film, especially since much of it is conversation. When the action occurs, though, it's execution is perfect. This is NOT a popcorn flick. It's an immersive movie, one you should really pay attention to (not because it's confusing, but to fully appreciate the nuances of the film). I would highly recommend watching it, especially if you are a fan of Cormac McCarthy and/or Ridley Scott. Seeing as this was McCarthy's first foray into screenplay writing, I think he did an excellent job. The Counselor has a pristine blend of drama, comedy, action, and romance; all of which twist together into a truly memorable movie. Enjoy!
