About the Movie
Academy Award winner Linda Hunt narrates a day in the life of Sharon as she struggles with a recent divorce and a current perception problem. A visually stunning adaptation of Betty Malicoat's short story of the same name. Part live action, part animation, The Crooked Eye dreamily weaves between past and present, delicately painting a psychological portrait of a troubled woman.
If you haven't yet seen this move you need to get of your butt and check it out! The acting is top notch and the story is a really cool idea. I've seen DC in lots of other great projects and TV shows and I know him from all the awesome voice over related jobs he's done: from promos to commercials, but he really shines in the Crooked Eye. I don't particularly like shorts but this movie is done with style and really super cool visual effects. Don't get me wrong, I don't just like movies for the special effect, but you never see shorts produced at this caliber and with so much attention to detail.
A mental trip
Though I'm a fan of his political videos, I was hesitant to rent this. The CGI doesn't look all that exciting. But it doesn't matter. The acting and the story are what really shines in this film. It moves fast and takes a few minutes to get ahold of whats going on, but after that it gets deep. But it doesn't spoon feed anything to you, either. I was surprised by how touched I was at the end. Linda Hunt rocks! (God of War, so, yeah!)
So, my ratings:
3 bucks? Way worth it.
A Surreal Gem
The Crooked Eye is a surreal short that beautifully captures the distorted perception of Sharon’s troubled mind. Director D.C. Douglas masterfully tosses us inside Sharon’s day as Academy Award winner, Linda Hunt’s narration and Sharon’s memories guides us through understanding her disconnected, depressed state. Fay Masterson does an outstanding job playing Sharon. D.C. Douglas has a small role as Sharon’s ex-husband, Frank but his true talent shines as the director and editor of this gem.
