Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Really, how slovenly is it to use invisible aliens? If you're going to tease us with nothing but pinwheels of light for three-quarters of the film, you'd better have one heck of a reveal up your sleeve. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Dec 26, 2011

Rotten: It's clear from early on that these characters are as indistinct and lazily rendered as the floating blobs chasing them. – Keith Staskiewicz, Entertainment Weekly, Dec 28, 2011

Rotten: What's the point of going all the way to Moscow if the shots you come back with end up looking like cheap green-screen process work? – Mark Olsen, Los Angeles Times, Dec 27, 2011

Rotten: An alien invasion flick that evidently expects dramatic shots of a depopulated Red Square to make up for a flatlining screenplay and the absence of even a single compelling character. – John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter, Dec 26, 2011

THE DUMBEST HOUR AND A HALF!

"The Darkest Hour" is basically a poorly-made re-hash of the terrible 2010 film "Skyline", only it's ten times more convoluted, confusing and unenjoyable. The characters are completely forgettable and extremely underdeveloped, the CGI effects are very cheap-looking and lazily put together and the screenplay is clumsily executed and doesn't contain anything even remotely original for a sci-fi movie. All in all, this is nothing more than yet another monotonous low-budget teen disaster flick that fails to set itself apart from every other apocalyptic action thriller out there. I saw it on an airplane and it kept putting me in and out of sleep. Seriously, it was that boring. But hey, if you don't mind wasting an hour and a half watching some annoying young people fend off a bunch of invisible floating blobs in Moscow, go ahead and rent the film. Just prepare to be very disappointed once it's over.

Great Sci-fi Genre Film

I liked it a lot. Don't let all the non-movie people tell you otherwise. It wasn't perfect. But it was cool. The aliens were a lot scarier and innovative than people give credit for. I love these kind of movies. It was apocalyptic, scary, thrilling and had a romantic element. Not a 9 or 10, but a good 7.5 or 8. Enjoyable to anyone with an open mind.

nah... :\

This is the kind of crap you'd find on the sci-fi channel at two in the morning. Awful acting, the plot almost puts you to sleep, and the movie leaves you wishing you hadn't decided to give it a watch in the first place. Just not worth it.
