About the Movie

High school senior Ben Mercado (Danté Basco) dreams of becoming an animator, and intends to go to art school instead of accepting a pre-med scholarship to UCLA. His father, however, is livid, and insists his son be a doctor, or else. Adding to the pressure is Ben's sister, Rose (Bernadette Balagtas), who expects him to show up at her all-important 18th birthday party. Although he agrees to attend, Ben's plan to duck out early soon changes when he meets and immediately falls in love with Annabelle (Joy Bisco), Rose's best friend. Which, of course, doesn't sit very well with Augusto (Darion Basco), Annabelle's possessive ex-boyfriend, a hotheaded thug.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: A neat blend of well-drawn major characters and drama, music, dance, romance and humor that generates considerable charm and achieves a heartwarming resolution of its generational conflict. – Lawrence Van Gelder, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: A universal coming-of-age story as illuminating as it is entertaining. – Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times, Feb 24, 2007

Fresh: Mostly the situations, albeit compressed, ring true; the characters are admirably multi-dimensional, and there are welcome doses of humor that compensate for any contrivances. – Frank Scheck, Hollywood Reporter, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: The film has a sweet low-budget quality that sometimes slips into TV-movie schmaltz. – Laura Sinagra, Village Voice, Jun 24, 2010
