About the Movie

The Deep Blue Sea stars Academy Award winner Rachel Weisz in a stunning performance that ranks as perhaps the best of her career and one of the strongest of the year, garnering a Golden Globe® nomination and New York Critics' Circle Award for Best Actress. Master chronicler of post-War England Terence Davies directs Weisz as Hester Collyer, the wife of an upper-class judge (Simon Russell Beale) and a free spirit trapped in a passionless marriage. Her encounter with Freddie Page (Tom Hiddleston), a troubled former RAF pilot, throws her life into turmoil, as their erotic relationship leaves her emotionally stranded and physically isolated.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: This is Rachel Weisz's movie. She's as luminous as a Pre-Raphaelite portrait, yet she brings to Hester a high-wire, modern tremulousness... – David Edelstein, NPR, Apr 6, 2012

Fresh: This is an extremely deft job of adaptation. – Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune, Mar 30, 2012

Fresh: Rachel Weisz - in what has to be the performance of her career, and there have been lots of good ones - plays an intelligent woman in the grip of a lust that's too big to handle or suppress. She can either ride the tiger or be devoured. – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle, Mar 29, 2012

Rotten: Maddeningly oblique and incomplete, despite paying what at times feels like excruciating attention to the minutiae of a dying love affair's final hours. – Michael O'Sullivan, Washington Post, Mar 30, 2012

The music is really a bit too much

When I saw this movie, I had never heard such an overbearing film score in all my life and read up on it just to see if it was only me. Apparently that choice was something to do with making the movie more like a classic melodrama, the way they used scores in love stories from the 40s, when it's taking place. The result was a little tough to take after awhile. It is beautifully photographed, and the acting is fine, but there is also something overbearing about the whole thing in general. I wanted to like it but I did end up laughing in many parts (which weren't supposed to be funny) just to release the suffocation it gave me.

Great movie!

I'm such a big Tom Hiddleston fan and I can't wait until I can buy it! Such a good movie. Very well acted and directed!

I wouldn't recommend it...

Tom Hiddleston and Rachel Weisz are great actors; no doubt about that. It was thoughtfully laid out and all the scenes were meaningful. I wouldn't recommend it though because it's just... such a "bummer". It had a happy ending in a way but not the one you'd want. I'm looking for another movie to watch after it so I won't feel so freaking depressed.
