Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Instead of turning soft and squishy, this examination of karma gets tougher as it goes along. Its refusal to settle into a cozy niche may be commercially disastrous, but I take it as a sign of integrity. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Nov 1, 2012

Fresh: [A] provocatively acrid adult comedy of lies, deceits, and a touch of murder. – Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly, Nov 1, 2012

Rotten: It's a frustrating movie in its inconsistency. – Christy Lemire, Associated Press, Oct 31, 2012

Rotten: The movie is many things, but a mess isn't one of them. Estes knows exactly what he wants. Whether it's worth wanting is another matter. – Mark Feeney, Boston Globe, Nov 1, 2012

Date movie on acid! Loved it!!

This is a hilarious dark comedy. Fantastic. Wonderful and bizarre and entertaining. About a man who makes mistakes and gets squeezed by life in funny, absurd and twisted ways. Really wicked and unusual and unexpected. It surprised me about 1,000 times. Laura Linney is hands down crazy and amazing in the film and Elizabeth Banks has a scene towards the end of the film that had me falling off the couch in laughter. Tobey Maguire is a great anti-hero -- the maker of his own demise. Really well done. Ray Liotta and Dennis Haysbert and Kerry Washington all turn in great supporting roles too. Kerry is super hot in the film. She plays a naughty 420 friendly psychiatrist who Tobey makes some very sexy mistakes with and has to pay the piper. *****!! Like nothing else you're going to see this year, I guarantee it. Like Dr. Seuss had his way with an adult comedy.

The Devil's in THE DETAILS

Dark comedies don't come any better than this and I have to say it is great seeing Tobey Maguire go back to his indie roots and experimenting with roles after SPIDERMAN. This movie takes you to a very familiar place you might be in your own life -- finally got the house, wife, kids, job -- and shows even though you might have everything if you don't be careful and keep your nose clean you could wildly lose it all. Laura Linney is phenominal, just crazy and hilarious and sad, and we all have a neighbor like her... look around... you know you do. Watch this movie. Your heart will drop at some points, laugh at a lot of points, and you'll be so incredibly glad you aren't Tobey. I loved this.

The Details delivers big laughs

If you like dark comedy, very dark comedy and wickedly funny then this film is for you. The Details weaves a complex twisted tale where little lies and mistakes compound themselves into the insane and unimaginable. Tobey Maguire shows us he's more than Spiderman and can have a very dark side as well. Laura Linney lets loose as the looney bird neighbor and was obviously given free rein to take the character to the extremes. You will find yourself laughing out-loud, and simultaneously stopping to wonder if you really should be laughing at something that twisted.
