About the Movie

In 1976 San Francisco, Minnie Goetze (Bel Powley) is growing up at the crossroads of the fading hippie movement and the dawn of punk rock. Like most teenage girls, Minnie is longing for love, acceptance and a sense of purpose in the world. Minnie begins a complex love affair with her mother's (Kristen Wiig) boyfriend, "the handsomest man in the world," Monroe Rutherford (Alexander Skarsgård). What follows is a sharp, funny and provocative account of one girl's sexual and artistic awakening, without judgment. Based on the critically acclaimed graphic novel by Phoebe Gloeckner.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The film is harsh but wonderful. It shouldn't be funny, too, but somehow it is, and somehow it's the right kind of funny. – Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune, Aug 13, 2015

Fresh: It's work, but it's ultimately rewarding work. It tackles some truths that other movies wouldn't touch, not even with a stick and thick gloves. – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle, Aug 13, 2015

Fresh: "The Diary of a Teenage Girl" is a breakthrough moment in the culture in that it depicts youthful female sexuality ... not just with the unapologetic frankness the boys usually get, but with an awareness of all the places a girl's urges will take her ... – Ty Burr, Boston Globe, Aug 20, 2015

Fresh: Heller and Powley present a journey that, stripped to its most basic emotional elements, is timeless and universal. – Ann Hornaday, Washington Post, Aug 13, 2015

Overrated

Creepy pedophilia disguised as a benign coming of age story. I heard so much hype/buzz about this - starting at Sundance - that it was one of the best movies of the year. Fish Tank was a better representation of this subject matter. As a former teenage girl, I’m still disgusted a day later, and don’t feel like the script or direction got into the psychology of the protagonist. It’s sad that the industry relies so much on exploitation of underage girls, when there are so many great, well-made, and positive movies that don’t even get picked up and release under the radar. Also the casting threw me off - Powley sounds nothing like a Bay Area teen. Her accent was distracting. Perhaps with the “groupie culture” of the 70’s, this was common place - but then please explain why Roman Polanski is fleeing charges.

Brilliant

So moved. Deserves an oscar. Deep, raw, challenging, but tender and uniquely able to go places the movies now days rarely do. Usually we get the heart but not the edgy stuff. Or vice-versa. This film so effortlessly weaves us into the lives of these characters, without being didactic or preachy I still came away really feeling like three was such emotional insight in this film, these actors, and especially the writer / director. What a script. What a great directorial turn. WOW> THANK YOU.

Just awful

So much hype about how female sexuality has never been shown as it is in this movie. So not true. The second this girl has sex her life turns to crap. Not original at all. The story basically says if you're a girl and you have sex you will become a slut that goes to bars, does drugs and does inappropriate things in bar bathrooms. Oh! And when you finally realize you should have kept your legs closed you can blame it on the first guy you slept with. What a disappointment. There was also very little plot. Just way to many sex scenes to try and distract the audience into thinking they aren't watching a terrible movie. Try again guys. Especially you Alex. Seriously dude. What. The. Heck.
