Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Unfortunately, and despite its promising start, "The Dressmaker" doesn't move much beyond the level of well-costumed playacting.
Rotten: Kate Winslet can do anything ... except save this movie from quirky overkill.
Fresh: It might not all flow, but between Winslet and castmate Judy Davis's various spitfire moments and some potent dark turns, there's a fair amount to like.
Fresh: There's plenty to admire here, especially if your taste is tailored to the unusual.
Though the trailer looked interesting, and the characters definitely were, it was a very dark and disturbing movie. Be prepared to watch a movie about just how vile, horrific and damaging living in a community of bullies can be. Though I love Ms Winslet, the darkness and death was depressing. Be prepared to be deeply depressed, not amused at this film at all. Thanks for ruining my evening!
The Dressmaker: A Union of Comedy & Macabre
The reviews do not do this movie justice--yes, it is quirky, and heartbreaking, and in the end leaves you feeling empty, but isn't that what happens with revenge? This movie does an honest job staying as close to the book as possible within the given time period. The casting felt real and true to the novel. Fans of the novel already know the conflict of the story rests in a tragedy, and I actually had thoughts of putting it down and walking away because it left me feeling ill, but Tilly felt the same way and made it through on to a better life. Stick with the film, too, the end is worth it.
This is a great movie. I saw it when it first came out in Australia and thought it was a shame it didnt play all over the United States. The story's twists and turns will keep you interested and on your toes. This is a must see.
