About the Movie

Academy Award nominees Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes star in The Duchess: the compelling true story of a lavish world filled with smoldering passion, heartbreaking deception and stifling demands. Beloved by a nation but betrayed by her husband, Georgiana Spencer -- The Duchess of Devonshire and "Empress of Fashion" -- faced an agonizing choice between responsibility and love. This gripping portrayal of England's "It Girl" has won acclaim from audiences and critics alike. She was vivacious. She was heroic. She was The Duchess.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: It chronicles the saga of a vibrant and forward-thinking woman hampered by the constraints of a rigid society. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Nov 7, 2008

Rotten: It's disturbingly shallow, focused so tightly on one woman's feelings of repression and loneliness that it lacks any perspective on their causes. – Tasha Robinson, Chicago Tribune, Oct 20, 2008

Fresh: Beguiling. – Ruthe Stein, San Francisco Chronicle, Oct 18, 2008

Fresh: The Duchess is clearly Knightley's movie, ultimately rising or falling on her performance. She's up to the task, capturing both the charm and grace that made Georgiana so captivating. – Bill Goodykoontz, Arizona Republic, Jul 7, 2010

Keira Knightley was wonderful in this movie! Ralph was too, but I don't see how they can give him a Golden Globe nomination without giving her one as well! Seeing both of these talented actors working together is a real treat; therefore, I'm giving this five stars.

This was NOT your average historical drama where the whole plot was based around nothing but sex. It was about an extraordinary woman who had to decide between the two things she loved most in this world, her man and her children. It was also about a woman who dared to challenge society. With some of the best acting you'll find today and a riveting plot and script that made it so that you can't stop watching, this film about a lesser known Duke and Duchess is made to be watched and loved by history and film fans everywhere.

put up for rent?
