Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: A watchably confused eco-thriller that's never sure who its heroes are.
Fresh: As a scriptwriter, actress Brit Marling has so far demonstrated an unerring instinct for creating meaty, if somewhat hard-to-swallow, roles for herself.
Rotten: "The East" prizes an initial air of mystery over consistent drama, and as a result ends up squandering its intriguing premise.
Fresh: Another project that proves this actress and filmmaker has the chops that will guarantee her longevity in the movie industry.
Don't miss it!
This is one of the best films this year. It didn't get much of a theatrical run, but don't miss it. Excellent.
The Queen of Independent Films Returns
First of all, I'm a fan of psychological thriller/horror films and the psychedelic genre. Movies like Mullholand Drive, Identity, The Nines, Martha Marcy May Marlene are my preferred type of films.
While flying to KSA, I noticed Another Earth film being available to watch on the plane. The title and poster made me click and watch it before checking out any other movie on the list and I was surprised by the creativity of the film despite the low budget (after I read more about the film's creative process as I landed).
I kept following Brit Marling's news and I learned about The Sound of My Voice, that was such a great and remarkable film and a promise to a trilogy as Zal Batmanglij once noted (which I can't wait to see happening) and now The East. I got so excited as I knew she'll come up with something amazing and when I noticed the film on iTunes for Pre-Order few days ago, I rushed and hit the pre-order button and I got it yesterday and watched it!
The film is better watched without seeing any trailers. Watch it without expecting a good or a bad film. Just watch it based on synopsis and the concept. I did and I was very surprised how Brit Marling has grown in a matter story-telling, directing, acting and the type of contents she presents. Maybe Another Earth and The Sound of My Voice feel a bit homemade (though they look professional and are in no way primitive or badly directed) this one is the most professional looking.
The film tells a story about a woman torn between two worlds. I think the concept alone is intriguing because it's something most of us can relate to. We all have our principles, things we grew up learning, our cultures, traditions or beliefs that we find them cherish and hard to let go of and we usually tend to be more self-righteous when we're challenged by someone else of different points of view. That's what the films is mainly about. I can tell that it's more character-driven but it's story as well (like Brit's previous films) makes you think and actually wonder whether those you are told to call "bad guys" are actually bad or not.
Brit Marling, Ellen Page and Alexander Skarsgard bring you a remarkable adventure through the world and through the minds of the protagonists that makes you see the world from a different angle that many of us may avoid to think about checking.
Again, i say, the movie is not an action/thriller film, the movie is more drama and character-driven. Just download it, if you have an iPad, sync it to it, lay in bed with your iPad and watch it. You're gonna end up sitting on the but holding the iPad and checking how long is left for the movie to end from the excitement you'll have about how things will turn up in the end.
Brit Marling is definitely the Queen of Independent Films and If she ever reads this, I hope she keeps up the good work she's doing. Her films are better than 90% of those mainstream movies in cinemas the last few years.
I have to say that Brit Marling's movies are so unique. "Sound of my voice", "Another Earth" and the latest "The East". All of them are worth watching because they are different than other crap that we have right now. It was not the best movie of the year, but it is very enjoyable. The screenplay is just amazing. I wish Brit an oscar. And of course credit for the director and co-writer Zal Batmanglij. Both of them together are doing a pretty amazing job. I am waiting for the next flick ;)
