Michael Farr (Ciaran Hinds), a teacher raising his two kids alone since his wife died two years earlier, has been seeing and hearing strange things late at night. He isn't sure if he is having nightmares, or if he's experiencing a haunting. Working as a volunteer for an international literary festival, he is assigned to Lena Morelle (Iben Hjejle), an author of books about ghosts and the supernatural. Establishing a rapport with one another, Michael opens up and shares his terrifying experiences with her. However, Lena's attention is distracted by another novelist, Nicholas Holden (Aidan Quinn), with whom she had a brief affair. The trajectories of these three people lead them into a life-altering collision where the challenges of love, fear of the unknown, and release from the burden of grief are explored.

Fresh: Quinn, alternately charming and loathsome, is brilliant, as is Hinds, an actor who has elevated everything he's been in.
Fresh: Hinds has been ready for a role of this size and shape for years; it was simply a matter of finding it, and its finding him.
Fresh: The town and surrounding landscapes make a gorgeous setting -- the Irish tourist board will be happy -- but at its heart The Eclipse is a small, contained ghost story about a haunted man learning to exorcise himself.
Rotten: Ultimately, though, it feels fleeting and slight passing across our line of vision, never a full but merely a partial engagement.
The Eclipse was emotional and haunting. I don't want to say too much as to spoil any viewers experience. The music alone was worth watching the movie for. It can be jolting at times because of some of the scenes, you'll see why. I thought the acting was pretty good especially because there was no nudity or sex in the movie. These days, most movies about love have sex in it. I like it when you can feel the emotions of love from the characters without having to see them get it on. The relationship between the characters were beautifully built and very poignant at times. I would check out the soundtrack too. Just don't get sidetracked by the other Eclipse movie (twilight) that keeps showing up when you search for this movie. Worth watching!
"I wait in a place where the shadows run from themselves." White Room ; Cream
"The Eclipse" is a surreal walk in the shoes of a few Irish villagers. Some, on other sites, have criticized this piece for being somewhat disjointed and confusing. I must heartily disagree! It is simply a limited fragment of time in life of a few very interesting people in Ireland at a Literary Conference and how those lives rode a little rougher when disturbed by the supernatural. The music was beautiful and apropos, the subject matter intriguing and the acting very well done. This was an eccentrically mysterious movie you will either love or not. It IS definitely worth the time to give it a try.
Not really a ghost story, but a romantic tale of love lost and found again. If you are looking for a harum - scarum ghost story, you're likely to be disappointed. On the other hand, If you might be interested in a thoughtful tale about love and mortality, give it a try.
