From award-winning filmmakers Annie Sundberg and Ricki Stern (The Devil Came On Horseback and The Trials of Darryl Hunt) comes this provocative and expertly crafted film, The End of America, based on The New York Times bestseller by the same name. In a stunning indictment of sweeping policy changes during the Bush years, author Naomi Wolf (The Beauty Myth) makes a chilling case that American democracy is under threat. Investigating parallels between our current situation and the rise of dictators and fascism in once-free societies, Wolf uncovers a number of deeply unsettling similarities - from the use of paramilitary groups and secret prisons to the targeted suspension of the rule of law. With this galvanizing call to arms based on her recent book, she urges regular citizens to take back our legacy of freedom and justice.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Tightly constructed and fiercely one-sided.
Rotten: Despite the totalitarian drumbeating and the Constitution love, the movie feels strangely ahistorical and lacks real systemic analysis.
Fresh: Wolf's dire message has lost some of its urgency, but is still worth paying attention to, if only as a study of how aggressive regimes market their language in palatable ways.
Fresh: The End of America gives author and public intellectual Naomi Wolf an Inconvenient Truth-style platform to remind Americans about the Bush administration's assault on our civil liberties.
Look beyond partisan politics
Although I'm conservative, I've always been a big fan of Naomi's work. And while I agree with most of what she wrote here, I just wonder if she, and the other reviewers, are just as critical and skeptical of what is happening under the current administration as they were under the Bush administration? Health care that ties into the IRS? The efforts to regulate talk radio and the internet? Hiring union members to go to town hall meetings to beat the crap out of people opposed to health care (regardless of what you've heard, those initial protesters were not an organized group, now, both sides are organized). ACORN? Apollo? Are our liberties being threatened? You bet. But it's not a republican or democrat thing, it's a power thing. And the only way we can win this is to vote out incumbents from office.
An amazing and important film for these bittersweet times
While Barack Obama's recent inauguration has given the world a shot of hope, no one need be reminded how far the Bush administration went in eroding our civil liberties and making the United States an increasingly scarier place to live. The End of America uses historical examples, paralleling the erosion of past democracies with our own, to show just how easily a nation can begin to lose the freedoms so many of us take for granted. Anyone who's interested in maintaining and participating in democracy should consider The End of America essential viewing.
The Truth is Scary
As cliche as it may sound, this movie is a must see! This movie is based upon the past U.S. administration and how they used their power to dimish our rights as citizens. One main focus of the film is the government's use of the Patriot Act, and how it takes away our freedoms. Some of the visuals in this documentary are rather horrific, and show innocent citizens being assualted, arrested, and inprisioned by our government. This film is a rather upsetting look into what our governent has to failed to do, protect us as citizens. After viewing this film, the audience will have an urge to get up out of their seats and to start taking action to fight against what is rightfully ours, our Freedom. It is our duty as citizens to keep our government in check, and this film is informing us of what is really going on in this country, and we need to know about it! A MUST SEE.
