About the Movie

Peter Mettler’s enthralling, mind-bending new documentary is a tour de force that challenges our conception of time–and perhaps the very fabric of our existence. With stunning cinematography and a knack for capturing astonishing moments, The End of Time travels the planet—from the Cern particle accelerator outside Geneva to the lava flows of Hawaii; from a disintegrating Detroit where Henry Ford built his first factory to the tree where Buddha was enlightened. Both mind-expanding and eerily familiar, Mettler’s provocative film explores the links between renewal and destruction, between primordial mysticism and the furthest reaches of modern science, giving the viewer a transcendent cinematic experience.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: It's easy to mock some of these platitudes, and it's to Mr. Mettler's credit that he never does. His questions are answered with more questions, because words seem ultimately useless in his query. – Miriam Bale, New York Times, Nov 28, 2013

Rotten: "We all see our own unique rainbows," he reflects, with an absence of irony that in its own way is sort of endearing. The film goes on like this, glacially, for two hours. – Calum Marsh, Village Voice, Nov 26, 2013

Fresh: Funny how a film that explodes our conventional notions about time should be so up-to-date with the news. – Peter Howell, Toronto Star, Dec 11, 2012

Fresh: [I]t's about a series of seemingly disconnected topics linked by an abstract idea, and by a certain exploratory spirit. – Jonathan Romney, Film Comment Magazine, Feb 6, 2014

This is the most boring movie I have seen in a while. there are long scenes of slow moving natural events (like lava flowing) with no narration except for a few off the cuff comments every 10 minutes or so. I have no idea how anyone could rate this highly. Awful.

Total, incoherent nonsense

A number of people high on dope had to make this documentary. Stupid, time-filling film narrated with meandering explanations of obviously-stoned people. A complete waste of time unless you're looking for something to run while you smoke pot.
