Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Pleasantly dumb fun if you watch it with the right mind-set.
Fresh: The movie is excellent crap, fine junk, an exercise in campy movie nostalgia, and a demonstration of American supremacy in the field of nutty cosmetic enhancements for aging movie stars.
Fresh: The Expendables 2 is corny, barbaric and sometimes visually murky. But humor and self-deprecating macho charm make this male pattern badness crowd-pleasing fun.
Rotten: "The Expendables 2" is lazily satisfied with repeating the first movie's formula, shortcomings and grisly strengths alike, just as the first movie was content to slavishly, ploddingly cover the hits of the '80s.
A BLOODY GOOD TIME!
You pretty much know what you're getting with "The Expendables 2": a group of past-and-present action stars making wisecracks and blowing stuff up. And much like its predecessor, this film delivers on a truly massive scale. The plot itself is pretty straightforward. Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) has a relatively simple task for the Expendables, whose epic ranks include Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, and, this time out, Chuck Norris and Arnold Schwarzenegger. But when the plan goes awry, our heroes seek vengeance against the ruthless mercenary Jean Vilain (Jean-Claude Van Damme). From the rapidly-paced action sequences to the ridiculously over-the-top deaths, this film plays out like a big-budget B movie on steroids. Just when you think it can't get any more absurd and over-the-top, it knocks you square in the jaw with a scene so immaculately action-packed and deliriously violent, you'll be on the edge of your seat begging for more. Of course, when it comes down to the acting, don't expect any Oscar-worthy performances. Then again, anyone who complains about something as trivial as that in a flick like this is an idiot (no offense). Surprisingly enough, though, the film has a lot of humorous moments. The jokes themselves are mostly dumb and forgettable, but the way they're delivered by the actors is simply priceless. And by the way, expect a lot of awesomely corny one-liners. At the end of the day, "The Expendables 2" works because it never takes itself seriously. It knows it's a big, cheesy action flick, and that's what makes the whole thing such a fun ride. Plus, you can tell everyone in the cast is having a great time all the way through. If you ask me, this sequel is surprisingly better than the original. The line-up of action stars is bigger, the larger-than-life action sequences are incredibly fun to watch, and the subtle '80s references are hilariously clever. Suffice it to say, I had a great time with this movie, and I can't wait to rent it so I can experience the madness all over again. For any hardcore action junkie, this is a must-see!
EVEN BETTER SECOND TIME 'ROUND
I was pumped. Ill admit that. Best action movie all year. That's a fact people.
Almost a "you get what you pay for" thing
If you're looking for a great movie like a critic at RT then you're gonna be disappointed. Look at the cast and just see it for what it always was intended to be; a cheesy action movie with cheesy lines and even cheesier action scenes
So that was what I expected and loved it. Don't hate the cheese!
