Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: The Eye is the latest Western deconstruction of a successful Asian horror movie and it is louder and more literal than its inspiration.
Rotten: Yet another inferior remake of an Asian horror film.
Rotten: The most vivid aspect of The Eye is its poster image, that of a huge female eye with a human hand gripping the lower lid from the inside. The least vivid aspect is the way Jessica Alba delivers a simple line of expository dialogue.
Rotten: The movie is watchable -- never more gratuitously so than when Alba is filmed showering and slipping into a tank top. But we've been here before, no?
Looks can obviously be decieving...
When i first heard of "The Eye" i thought it would be another stupid horror flick. My thoughts completely changed once i saw the movie. This movie is amazing! Especially the ending. I don't think that there would be a bettter way to end the movie. Ladies and gentlemen, i introduce you to THE EYE.
Jessica Alba at her best.
Many people feel that Jessica Alba's acting talent is only skin deep. She disproves that theory in her latest thriller flick, "The Eye". The Eye is a remake of an Asian Horror Film of the same name -typical. Hollywood as made remakes of asian horror films such as One Missed Call, The Grudge, The Ring, Pulse, Dark Water, and now The Eye. The film starts out normal but ultimately reaches an intense climax before reaching the expostion, which returns to the same state as it was in the beginning. Jessica Alba plays Sydney Wells. She is a skilled violinist who is destined for fame. However, an accident that occured when she was very young robbed her of her eyesight for the rest of her life, or so she thinks. Sydney seems to be doing fine without her eyesight. Her sister (Indie queen, Parker Posey) feels guilty about what happened and due to the advances in stem cell research, she finally arranges for her to receive an eye transplant from an anonymous donor. She doesn't remember how people look, but then as she tries to get use to her eyesight, she starts to see strange things. Sydney knows that it is of a supernatural phenomena. With the help of her optomologist friend, played by Alessandro Nivola, she sets out on a journey to where the eyes originated, and she discovers a grim truth about it. The plot is filled with twists and turns that will keep the audience on the edge of their seat, all the way until the stunning climax. I applaud for Jessica Alba, she was excellent in the film. You could tell that she worked hard on it as well. I enjoyed the overall dark grim themes. Even the audience is puzzled about what is real and what is not in the movie.
"The Eye" is a great horror movie. It's actually one with a decent story and doesn't simply rely on gore to get its point across. Jessica Alba does excellent as the leading actress as she commands the screen and takes you on this incredible journey with her character. I think everyone should see this movie. You will not be dissapointed.
