Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: It recreates the awful noise of ignorance that can still be heard.
Rotten: The tragedy implied by this character tells us what we need to know about the blacklist's effect on people's lives; the rest of the movie adds almost nothing else.
Fresh: Bernstein smartly suggests how capitalism actually benefited from the oppression of suspected communists.
A surprisingly not well known Woody special
It's wonderful when a clever screenwriter, director, and actors are able to turn a smart script into a funny, deep and also sad movie. There is, quite clearly, a much deeper point in this movie, but it is told in a way that you don't feel the medicine going down and its point is made intelligently, elegantly and with humor and strength. I was very very pleasantly surprised by this somewhat hidden gem.
History made FUN!
I believe many people will be upset by the fact that this movie isn't the average Woody Allen movie with his wonderful one liners and wit. It is much more than that. This tells the hisyory of the U.S.A.s', 1950s' witch hunt where families and careers were uprooted and destroyed. You could read all about this in books or the NET but why not watch it all unfold in a wonderfully writen and entertaining comedy. True Woody Allen fans will aplaud at the end.
