Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Once again Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer has enriched the screen with a superb translation of a literary classic.
Fresh: No harmful false note is struck.
Fresh: Epic in scope, though intimate in effect.
Fresh: It's a typically lumbering, cautious, overblown Thalberg project, saved by Rainer's genuinely moving, Oscar-winning portrayal of Chinese peasantry, and by an immensely spectacular storm of locusts.
This is a wonderful adaptation of Pearl Buck's Pulitzer Prize winning novel. Doubtful that they could get away with casting non-Asian actors as the leads today, but that doesn't take away from the wonderful performances of these actors. A beautiful story and wonderfully done.
The Good Earth
When I first saw this movie, I was rather surprised as to how similar the movie was to the book. Not only that, I really love the amount of drama being put into the characters. As though they were actually real people. Plus, this movie really does bring out the message well that we should all take for granted what it is we already have and love. That I think is something even we Americans should learn. Of course the book did a good job with that also. To me, I believe this movie shall from now and forever be a timeless classic.
