From director Wong Kar Wai and starring Tony Leung (HERO) and Ziyi Yang (CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON), THE GRANDMASTER is an epic action film inspired by the life of Ip Man, the legendary kung fu master who trained Bruce Lee. The story spans the tumultuous Republican era that followed the fall of China's last dynasty. It was a time of chaos, division, and war that also heralded the golden age of Chinese martial arts. Filmed in a range of stunning locations that include the snow-swept landscapes of Northeast China and the subtropical South, THE GRANDMASTER features virtuoso performances by some of the greatest stars of contemporary Asian cinema.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: You leave this deeply flawed, deeply beautiful film with no doubt that you've seen an indisputable cinematic grandmaster in action.
Rotten: Beautiful but troubled, achieving in stretches the director's signature dreamy mood but dragged down by narrative confusions.
Fresh: As a kung fu film, "The Grandmaster," with its exhilarating fighting sequences, won't disappoint. As a Wong Kar-wai film, it rates high.
Fresh: "The Grandmaster" is the work of a director whose work throughout his career has been visually exhilarating, sensuous, even sublime. To that end, "The Grandmaster" doesn't disappoint.
Don't waste your time and money!
It's really a bad martial art movie without a clear story line. Don't waste your time and money!
This is an incredible movie, BUT, don't expect a "little Bruce Lee" story.
I wondered why such the disparity between 5 and 1 star ratings and now know why. All the 1-star folks are disappointed because this wasn't a "life and times of little Bruce Lee and the man who made him who he was" story. If you're looking for that then move on.
If you love cinematography, an amazing perfectly threaded score, 1940's China historical fiction, three intertwined beautifully inspired love stories, Crouching Tiger-like fight scenes with sweeping natural backdrops, fully-developed characters that you can't help, but to feel like you're living the story then THIS is your movie!
The Original is better - not what you think
Harvey Weinstein cuts a lot out of these films, he cut 22 minutes from this american version. The original is up for many awards (the full film from china, you can get it on eBay and other sites on blu ray) and better.
as for the other "original" ip man and ip man 2, they are very good, just different. different ways to tell story about same guy.
