Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: The Great Escape is simply great escapism.
Fresh: Producer-director John Sturges has fashioned a motion picture that entertains, captivates, thrills and stirs.
Fresh: Way too flabby at 168 minutes, but once this 1963 feature gets going it's good, solid stuff.
Fresh: Worth seeing the last half hour, if nothing else, for one of the best stunt sequences in years: McQueen's motor-cycle bid for freedom.
It's Quite Sad Really
This movie, like so many other movies of its time or even earlier, is one of those movies that just sticks with you. Practically every prison escape movie has been made because of the ideas presented in this film. Sadly, movies of this age are being left in the dust of new, brighter, "trendy" movies. Thank you iTunes for putting this one up for me to enjoy. I hope to see many more like it from my iPod. -Brad
A Truly Great Escape
Steve McQueen plays the ever-daring Cooler King in this fun, action packed film. In some ways it resembles the more recent Life is Beautiful, although The Great Escape takes itself less seriously, which is a good thing as far as this movie goes. The tension masterfully builds as the prisoners' tunnels go under way. I found myself holding my breath during the final night escape through the completed tunnel and cheering on McQueen as he did all possible to stay free. Funny, thrilling, inspiring, and in some cases emotional, this is one to place on the shelf along with other fun action classics. CONTENT: Mild rough language, high tension, mild violence, the death of a few major charicters. WHO: Older kids/young teens on up.
This movie is nothing short of amazing. This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Steve McQueen steals the show with his electrifying performance. The story is very smart and intriguing. People of all ages will love this movie!!!
