About the Movie

The '20s never roared louder than in this sumptuously romantic retelling of F. Scott Fitzgerald's Jazz Age classic. Robert Redford stars as Jay Gatsby, who had once loved beautiful, spoiled Daisy Buchanan (Mia Farrow), then lost her to a rich boy. But now Gatsby is mysteriously wealthy... and ready to risk everything to woo Daisy back. A winner of two Academy Awards, The Great Gatsby features a fine supporting cast and an elegant script by Francis Ford Coppola. And at its center is the opulent evocation of an era of hot jazz and cold champagne, of women as exotic and demanding as hothouse flowers, and of lives made soft by too much, too soon.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The movie can't see this through all its giant closeups of pretty knees and dancing feet. It's frivolous without being much fun. – Vincent Canby, New York Times, Mar 3, 2015

Rotten: The film is faithful to the letter of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel but entirely misses its spirit. – Jay Cocks, TIME Magazine, Mar 6, 2013

Rotten: The Francis Coppola script and Jack Clayton's direction paint a savagely genteel portrait of an upper class generation that deserved in spades what it got circa 1929 and after. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

The American Dream

This movie is set in the affluent Great Neck of New York. The lifestyle that we all came to America is Gatsby. His mansion is where the party is at. Despite all of his lavishes, he only wants Daisy. She has married since Gatsby left to the war. His quest of a toil acquiring wealth to find his true love. "Rich girls don't marry poor," cries Daisy. His legacy was cut short because of social class corruption and lies. The novel is as accurate as reading the book.

Not Bad

I'm sort of reading the book for my english literature class, so I wanted to get a better idea and understanding by watching the film. So overall the movie was easy to follow, simple english, and had straight forward points. If you never read the book you won't be lost at all with the film, plus if you like like tragic love storys this ones for you.
