About the Movie

Sergeant Gerry Boyle is an eccentric small-town cop with a confrontational and crass personality and a subversive sense of humor. A longtime policeman in County Galway, Boyle is a maverick with his own moral code. He has seen enough of the world to know there isn’t much to it and has had plenty of time to think about it. When a fellow police officer disappears and Boyle’s small town becomes key to a large drug trafficking investigation, he is forced to at least feign interest when dealing with the humorless FBI agent Wendell Everett assigned to the case. Left to run his territory to his liking for many years, he is not at all impressed when the FBI comes to town.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Crisp, acid-tongued and sharply acted, it's the sort of exercise in tangy Celtic cynicism that's become one of the Emerald Isle's most reliable imports. – Amy Biancolli, Houston Chronicle, Aug 19, 2011

Fresh: McDonagh's script is agile, darting between the ridiculous, the sage and the surprisingly sentimental. His love of language and the absurd has hints of the wisecracking Quentin Tarantino. But the story is decidedly more rooted in Ireland's loamy turf. – Lisa Kennedy, Denver Post, Aug 19, 2011

Fresh: There are few things finer in cinema than Brendan Gleeson's fat, happy face. – Tom Long, Detroit News, Aug 19, 2011

Fresh: "The Guard" is not the most original buddy-cop movie you'll see, but it well may be one of the most entertaining. – Bill Goodykoontz, Arizona Republic, Aug 18, 2011

Customer Reviews

A pitch-perfect black comedy,"In Bruges" style

"The Guard" is a gut-busting showcase for Brendan Gleeson with Don Cheadle admirably carrying the weight of conflict throughout this slow but steady ride .

Those with a strong appreciation for dark humor ("Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang", "Snatch", "Four Lions", etc) will not be disappointed.

Very Enjoyable

Of course, I had to watch with subtitles. But, story good. Music good. Acting very good. Very entertaining,.

well crafted

There is obviously great rapport between Cheadle and Gleeson and they both put in a superb performance. The western music in the background was a wonderfully tongue-in-cheek. Enjoyed it very much.
