Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: "The Guilt Trip" is tripe, but it's tripe that knows its audience. Seriously, take your mother. It'll be a mitzvah.
Rotten: Eight days in a car with these two is like eight weeks with shingles.
Rotten: Andrew [Rogen], who has invented an organic cleaning compound, pitches it to retailers in a succession of meetings across the country that have no grounding in any known reality.
Rotten: [A] lifeless comedy about an overbearing mother and her exasperated adult son ...
I rented this movie because I love Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand, I thought that it would be a fun loving light movie that I could watch, despite the reviews.
I have to say... I am so happy I did... I laughed and I cried, it was really touching. The relationship between the two is something I could relate to.
They had great chemistry as a mother-son team.
It was a pleasant surprise! Forget the score.. or the meter!
I don't write reviews that often... or ever. The fact that I am writing one now.. shows how much I liked it!
A FUNNY BUT FORMULAIC ROAD TRIP COMEDY
"The Guilt Trip" is really more of a guilty pleasure than anything else. It stars Seth Rogen as an inventor who plans to drive cross-country in order to pitch his latest product. He invites his overbearing mom (Barbara Streisand) along in an attempt to fix her up with a past boyfriend in San Francisco (and of course, things don't exactly go according to plan). Rogen and Streisand share an easy chemistry as a charmingly dysfunctional mother-son duo who can never seem to agree on anything. Unfortunately, the comic talents are largely wasted in a formulaic plot that feels all too familiar. Still, the flick does benefit from a few undeniably funny moments and some heartfelt scenes of mother-son bonding. Even if the script is packed with one too many sentimental clichés, this is still a fun little movie to watch if you're in the mood for some lighthearted laughs. Take it for what it is, and you'll have a pretty good time.
This is the first movie in YEARS that I can honestly say I loved!!! Subtle, smart comedy that actually uses wit instead of gross out, low 'humor'. An elegant and thoroughly enjoyable movie for anyone- you need not be a fan of Barbra before, but most certainly you will be after :)
