Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The Gunman degenerates into dreary setups for guns and gore. Penn merits more. So do we. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Mar 20, 2015

Rotten: Part of the contract that movies of this sort forge with moviegoers is that the reasons for all the running and gunning won't get in the way of the action. "The Gunman" doesn't play by those rules. – Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times, Mar 19, 2015

Rotten: Rarely, though, have two Academy Award-winning actors been so stunningly off the mark in the same movie. – Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times, Mar 27, 2015

Rotten: It devolves into a mess of worn plot lines. If Morel wanted to give Penn's career new life as a world-weary action hero, he missed his target. – Tony Hicks, San Jose Mercury News, Mar 20, 2015

The Gunman a hit

Although not a Sean Penn fan, this movie was very well acted and the story line realistic and engaging. The technical aspects were spot on. I highly recommend it.

uh… nope

"one of the greatest actors of his generation"…. nope, sorry, Penn isn't. He's okay at best. And he should stick to other types of movies, because he was completely unbelievable as a "action tough guy" in the likes of Willis or Stallone or many others. Not everyone is meant to play certain characters in certain types of genres, and he was definitely out of his element here. On top of that, the movie was pretty boring, very predictable, we've seen this tale over and over and over, only this time the cast was mediocre at best. Save your money...

movie is not good, penn is worse

Somewhere along the line propaganda seemed to form of Sean Penn being an actor of some ability. If there ever was an instance which flatly disproves such a factoid—this is that!! The type casting of him as a buffoon has worked for him in the past… but this character, a grown man with gravitas-- is is simply far beyond Penn’s wheelhouse. For him even to approximate (particularly given his non-existent acting skill set) such makes us to not be sure whether to be more sorry for the public watching or poor Sean’s embarrassing of himself. Do yourself a favor and RUN from this one...
