About the Movie
THE HERO stars the legendary Sam Elliott as an aging actor confronting mortality in the moving new film from writer/director Brett Haley (I’LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS). Lee Hayden (Elliott) is a Western icon with a golden voice, but his best performances are decades behind him. He spends his days reliving old glories and smoking too much weed with his former-co-star-turned-dealer, Jeremy (Nick Offerman), until a surprise cancer diagnosis brings his priorities into sharp focus. He soon strikes up an exciting, contentious relationship with stand-up comic Charlotte (Laura Prepon), and he attempts to reconnect with his estranged daughter, Lucy (Krysten Ritter), all while searching for one final role to cement his legacy. THE HERO is a beautiful and poignant celebration of life and the legacies we all leave behind.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Without Lee's complicity in the triteness of his story - and Mr. Elliott's ability to sell it as a melancholy burden - this low-key feature by Brett Haley wouldn't be half as pleasurable.
Fresh: You will almost assuredly leave The Hero knowing that [Sam Elliott] is a bona fide national treasure.
Fresh: Haley, who co-wrote the script with Marc Basch, brings enough understated sympathy to Lee's character to make the picture work--it throws off a gentle, sweet-spirited energy.
Rotten: The script around him doesn't do Elliott or the character justice, and is a missed opportunity at a late-in-life comeback role for the one-time Western star.

Sam at his best 👍
I'm a huge fan of this actor. And this movie is almost a biography per say of this actor. He has a golden voice 🤑. He's done more voice over work than any other actor as well as his quite but believable persona as a true western man. Loved his wife ( Katherine Ross) was in this film and ironically 1 daughter as in real life. I could watch him make toast and he'd put meaning behind it 😉. Even if your not a fan of Sam E - this is a movie you don't want to miss. Kudos to the director, writers and cast ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫. Can't wait to own this flick
Smooth As Buttah...
Sam Elliott is amazing in THE HERO -- it's his swan song to say the least. But he's surrounded by a killer cast including a hilarious Nick Offerman, adorable Laura Prepon and a supporting cast that feels genuine to the world.
GREENINGS SCREENINGS
There tends to be a presumption that comes with the word "artsy" in regards to film. That a film feels boring or drawn out, even if it's well crafted like The Tree of Life. However, The Hero proves that one can be artsy and entertaining, especially with a lead like Sam Elliott who takes every unspoken moment to say something emotional about his character. The film does suffer from a natural comparison with films that have similar themes such as Lost in Translation and The Wrestler. The negative impact being that it never achieves the same emotional impact of those other films, but still makes a respectable effort.
