Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: After years of vivisectionist splatter, here is a horror movie with real shivers. – Manohla Dargis, New York Times, Oct 30, 2009

Fresh: West avoids cliche and cheesiness with wise casting choices. Donahue's naturalistic performance is as persuasive as the subtly sinister portrayals by Tom Noonan and Mary Woronov. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: West's assured way with widescreen framing, long takes and silences followed by sharp if explainable noise are almost cruelly funny in their heart-stopping pleasures. – Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: The House of the Devil is really a romance: a love letter to the kind of gal we thought had given up the ghost. – Stephanie Zacharek, Salon.com, Jul 7, 2010

"Oh! And don't forget the pizza".....

Personally, I LOVED this movie. It was like discovering that creepy little film from 1983 that you had somehow missed among all those rows of rentable VHS tapes. What a happy find! I was glued to the screen and that's what a good suspense film should invoke (no pun intended). Music was spot-on as well as the performances and cast choices. It's amazing what some creativity and ingenuity can do despite the lack of a blockbuster budget. The slow pacing was effective and would not have seemed right otherwise....it's purposeful. Raw, grainy suspense without the obligatory one-last-shock-ending. Nice bow out.

AMAZING!!

Ti West is an excellent director and this is just another great movie to add to the list. I truly felt like I was back in the 80's watching a classic slasher film. Although not EVERYONE will be able to appreciate this movie for what it is, if you're a TRUE horror film fanatic like me, you will most definitely love this.

Great old fashioned horror film.

Great old fashioned horror film. The director uses an effect on the film itself to make it look like an old '80's B horror flick which also adds to it's appeal. If you're looking for tons of blood and gore, then this is not for you. it builds slowly, but when you get to the end, there's a pay off. Very "Roman Polanski." For you kids out there , that's a director.
