Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: There is some good humor in the dialog which not only pays off well against the ghostly elements, but provides a release for laughter so it does not explode in the suspense sequences. – Variety Staff, Variety, Oct 17, 2011

Fresh: If one had to pick the best of the campy horror films that made [Castle's] reputation, this 1958 feature would probably be it. – Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: The film has a genuinely creepy atmosphere and boasts at least one leap-outa-your-seat shock moment. – Film4, Oct 6, 2013

Excellent B Movie Fun

This is a good B movie and if you take five minutes to visit the IMDB or a few other archival sites and research William Castle and his films, you'll appreciate it even more... there are some startling moments, excellent cinematography/ effects given the era, spooky sound work, and Vincent Price is delitefully abusive as the rich husband who'd just as soon kill his young wife as look at her, yet simple murder is too barbaric... This was re-made with Geoffrey Rush in Price's part and Famke Jansen as the spiteful wife and I suggest that you check out that film after you've seen this, it's a great horror film in it's own right... but this film is a brilliant example of William Castle and his showmanship, it's just a shame that the film doesn't come with all of the Castle trappings!

i enjoyed it

great atmosphere, and some babe-ish Babes. :) my only complaint is that the end was a head-scratcher for me. took me completely by in, "wait - you mean, that's *it*?!" fun though. definitely worth a watch. i may even add it to my collection. :)

If you like a good luagh this movie's for you, well i laugh at every horror movie really but this is fun and entertaining watch for the scene in the basement with the crusty hovering lady lol.
