About the Movie

Beneath the fake blood and cheap masks of countless haunted house attractions across the country, there are whispers of truly terrifying alternatives. Looking to find an authentic, blood-curdling good fright for Halloween, five friends set off on a road trip in an RV to track down these underground Haunts. Just when their search seems to reach a dead end, strange and disturbing things start happening and it becomes clear that the Haunt has come to them...

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: If you're relatively easily scared or are in a theater full of people who are, the film might be good for a few screams. But only if you're the patient sort. – Neil Genzlinger, New York Times, Oct 9, 2014

Rotten: Never transcends a predictable narrative trajectory to deliver much in the way of creepy atmosphere, let alone actual scares. – Dennis Harvey, Variety, Oct 10, 2014

Fresh: The Houses October Built" proves one of the more successful attempts at the found-footage horror flick since Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones. – Martin Tsai, Los Angeles Times, Oct 10, 2014

Fresh: The scary Halloween house at your local amusement park is child's play compared to the "extreme haunts" that fill this uneven but intriguing found-footage horror flick. – Chuck Wilson, Village Voice, Oct 7, 2014

If you like Haunted Houses, you'll love this...

Really enjoyed it. Well executed. Fun and scary. What more could you want. Just in time for Halloween. I'm going to a Haunted House tonight!

Great Premise/Dissapointing execution

Great idea and some well shot scenes of existing haunted house attractions, but ultimately the film is a huge let down. The characters are not interesting and not worth caring about. No real clear motivation, seems like a group of unemployed 30-something's were bribed by two (brothers?/filmmakers?) guys with a nice RV. Wasn't even clear two of the group were dating until we
See them in bed 2/3 into it. Boring scenes between the group on the RV drag on and on without bringing new info or character development. The interviews with people who are haunt actors could be really interesting, but instead they feel random and disrupt flow of the movie. The ending is VERY unsatisfying and filled wit plot holes. I really wanted to like this movie :-(

Great concept and ridiculously creepy

What a ride!!
This movie is worth a watch. Especially during the month of October. Thank you to the filmmakers who keep Halloween themed movies alive and do it well. Some of the scenes dragged and I wanted more character development but once the climax hits, you'll be left unnerved and horrified. I'm still feeling uneasy as I write this review. If anything, this movie is going to keep my away from haunt houses for a LONG time!
