About the Movie

THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE narrates the true story of two brothers who embark on a remarkable quest to find meaning—and light—in a seemingly dark world. They begin their journey with the homeless on the streets of New York City, and continue on to spend time with orphaned children in Peru and the enigmatic lepers of Ghana. Their epic voyage across continents—and through tremendous suffering, hope, love, and forgiveness—awakens them to the beauty and resilience of the human spirit.

"The Human Experience" is not the right title for this film. It should have been called something like "Two Guy's Experience of the Human Experience".

While I love the ambition it took to attempt this film, I think it just doesn't hang together. It's far too subjective, the editor consistently favors the perspective of the narrators instead of the people they interview. It's a little like watching someone's extreme vacation video. Also the MTV-Reality-TV-style editing and dramatic music is actually kind of offensive at times, especially in the leprosy camp. As someone who has worked as a photojournalist in some pretty rough places in the world, I feel like this film more pitied its subjects than actually told their stories. The religious undertones were also a little blah, but I'm easily put off by that. It was a good idea but a little half baked and a little naive. Sorry guys!

At least one positive thing is that there are some nice shots of their locations.

A compelling story sure to change the way you think about your life and purpose. Powerfully written and well-executed.
