Plot Summary

Martin David (Willem Dafoe), a skilled and focused mercenary, is sent into the Tasmanian wilderness on a hunt for a tiger believed to be extinct. Hired by an anonymous company that wants the tiger’s genetic material, Martin arrives in Tasmania posing as a scientist. He proceeds to set up base camp at a broken-down farmhouse, where he stays with a family whose father has gone missing. Usually a loner, Martin becomes increasingly close to the family. However, as his attachment to the family grows, he is led down a path of unforeseen dangers, complicating his deadly mission.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: A lean, disturbing and beautifully photographed thriller... – Andrew O'Hehir,, Jan 5, 2012

Fresh: Filmed during the months leading up to the 2009 presidential election in Iran, The Hunter still seethes with fury -- and anticipates the blood that would spill after the vote. – Melissa Anderson, Village Voice, Feb 7, 2012

Authentic and Magical

Love this film, it never tries to be something it's not. It a wonderful roller coaster ride of intrigue and suspense with touches of heart and emotive substance. Magical film. Landscapes and music are sublime. Dafoe is sensational! 5 stars! Can't wait to see it at the cinema.

Best movie I've seen in a while

I loved this movie. This was the lone bright spot for me in the last 3 months of awful to fair movies. 3 family members watched it with me and we all liked it so much, we watched it twice. If you like scenery, a little wildlife, and an intriguing mystery, I'd bet you'd like this movie also.

Very good !!

Very good movie and Dafoe gives one of his best performances.
