Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Lee daringly chooses to keep his story's motivational mysteries unexplained, leaving this richly observed film open to the viewer's assessments. Yet the sense of imbalance is ever-present and strong. – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: The best film about family so far this year. Just don't think Disney. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Nov 24, 2006

Fresh: A well-observed and deftly performed examination of upper-middle-class emotional deep freeze... – Todd McCarthy, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: It's unfortunate that as capable a team as director Lee and screenwriter-producer Schamus should have become fascinated with such unpromising material. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Jan 28, 2006

The film gets under you skin and stays there for day's. Ang Lee is one hell of a filmmaker, I highly suggest this one if you missed it because a lot of you did.

A contemporary drama. A slow contemporary drama with marital dischord. Why did Criterion pick this one up...

heart-wrenchingly beautiful

this is by far one of the best movies ever made. and after more than 6 years, the very last, almost speachless scene remains engraved in my memory... i'm in awe of this movie, and i always will be. and i hope you will too.
