Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The Innkeepers makes such youthful passivity seem nearly as treacherous as opening the cellar door. – Mary F. Pols, TIME Magazine, Feb 3, 2012

Fresh: There's a skillful appreciation here for the kind of subjective dislocation behind the best ghost stories, and in this era of bloody-disgusting, that kind of smart ambiguity is welcome indeed. – Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times, Feb 3, 2012

Fresh: So entertaining are the characters that you may leave the theater before realizing that the film's specters might emanate from somewhere much closer -- much, much closer -- than the haunted history of a Connecticut hotel. – Jeannette Catsoulis, NPR, Feb 3, 2012

Rotten: Up until near the end ... you could mistake it for a low-key haunted-house comedy. – John DeFore, Washington Post, Feb 3, 2012

Decent ghost story

The ghost story is one of my favorite genres, and it is rare to see one well done. This movie is fairly well done. It creates an excellent atmosphere, has plausible characters, and a decent story. The story is set in an old New England inn, The Yankee Pedlar Inn, where many years earlier a woman committed suicide. The inn is slated for demolition, and there only a couple of guest, and two staff, who are interested in investigating the paranormal phenomena, at the desk. Special effects are kept to a minimum, a real plus in an era when so many directors go overboard of the special effects.
